Welcome to the Texas Viper fleet!
We have a rapidly growing and enthusiastic group of Viper sailors in the Lone Star State, and a 2009 Texas Viper Circuit as well.
The Texas Viper fleet is growing by leaps and bounds; the latest addition to the fleet is two brand new boats for Austin, TX, which were delivered just in time to race at Charleston Race Week as part of the 32-boat Viper fleet, largest fleet at the regatta!
The Texas Viper Fleet has boats in The Dallas/Ft. Worth and Austin areas. The fastest growth is happening in Austin right now, where the fleet has grown from one to three boats with the two new vipers mentioned above, and a fourth brand new boat is coming to Austin later this summer, taking the Austin Yacht Club Viper contingent to 4 boats.
We are actively seeking to grow the Texas fleet, both in boat owners and crew. All the Texas Viper sailors welcome you to come sailing with us, on the hottest boat in the Lone Star State!
Come for a test sail, or just join us for a race to see what all the fuss is about.

So many people have requested that the Viper class profile Jeff Jones that we couldn't ignore it any longer. It's very possible that Jeff is the most prolific Viper owner in class history, having owned four boats and restored several others for the benefit of the Texas Viper fleet. As a true Texan, he is a larger than life character -- the first one to rig and launch on days when weaker hearted (and weaker livered) sailors stay ashore, starting post race parties where none existed, and antagonizing past class presidents on a variety of internet message boards. The Viper class is a larger and more interesting place to sail thanks to Mr. Jones, but for the newbies on the coasts, you may not yet know this wily coyote. So here we go... After months a quiet negotiations, and supportive conversations with Viper sailors in CT and TX, Mark McNamara sent an email to Viper sparkplugs late last night.
"The Cat is out of the bag. All official. My Viper and I are now residents of Houston Texas! The Family will follow later this year. I just could not pass up this awesome opportunity to implement my model into KO and grow it.
Thank you to all the Viper fleet for the kind words and support. I can’t miss a chance to thank the Viper people of Houston, like Pat Gibson, who have been so supportive of this venture. I am really jazzed about the whole thing.
My Viper is sitting in the Lot at KO. Its really bugging me. After all the work with the transaction, I need to get out sailing. Great Breeze here! Be patient while I transition to the new Website and FB. There are some really cool things coming on that front.
Be well and we’ll see you soon.
Mark

To make the story short, a couple of days prior to the regatta I drove 59 hours from Dallas to Long Island (back and forward and a touch and go trip) to pick up hull #107. This was the only way we will make the regatta. At the beginning the idea sounded crazy but now a couple of days later I look back and all the effort was so worthy. "It has been a long time since I have not have so much fun racing sailboats! " On the first day, races where postponed and rather that just sit and wait, the Texas Viper group (which is really crazy) pop up the blender and start having drinks like it was the end of the planet. From there was pure FUN!
4 races in shifty 8 to 12 knots, lots of lead changes, 4 winners in four races...what else you can ask for? Ok, maybe a couple of big swells for downwind surfing but it can not be perfect, no? Sailing with Giacomo, my 13 year old son and Rod Favela (145 lbs) meant that we will need to hike extra hard and since it was over 11 years since the last time I had to hike it, it had been painful at times but we always end up with an smile. How we manage to win the regatta, I don't know and I will leave it for later, in the mean time I am looking forward to the next Viper event: Wurfest Regatta (San Antonio, TX). Drinking Final Tally from the Pisco Sour Bar prior to the first gun (as reported by our Fleet Captain):
- 4 bottles of Pisco, - 2 pounds of sugar, - 40 limes, - 16 pounds of ice, - yielding about 20 batches of Pisco Sours.

Don't let your Viper sit at your garage, see you at the next event!!!

Last weekend Texas viper sailors kicked off the 2010 championship series in Houston Tx. The first stop of this three-regatta series was hosted by the Lakewood Yacht Club, run in conjunction with their “shoe” regatta. On-line registration for the event opened on April 27th and by the 28th eight Viper 640’s were registered for the event. A post on the local racing forum says it all “where in the heck did the vipers come from”.
Having that many boat’s registered before there were any other two boats in a class made a very strong statement – Texas viper sailors love their boats and were excited about attending this event!
